Accent Financial Services was founded by Matthew M. Butschek rather unconventionally. Although his career was with Southwestern Bell (now known as AT&T) as an electrical engineer, accountant, and manager, his personal interests revolved around farming and ranching, a passion that he cultivated growing up on his family homestead.
In 1969, he purchased a large piece of property in East Texas where he planned to raise cattle and hay. Knowing that ranches came with tax deductions, he began to read the tax code regarding farming and ranching businesses. His background in accounting gave him an advantage here over the average taxpayer. Once he had a strong understanding of the tax code, he prepared his own tax return containing his ranching business.
As he got to know his neighbors over the next several years, he found out that many of them didn't know how to optimally report their farming and ranching businesses on their tax returns. He offered to prepare their returns for them, an offer that they were happy to accept. All were shocked by the results. Many received a refund when they were accustomed to owing, and others received larger refunds than ever before. They quickly spread the word to their family and friends who also had farming and ranching enterprises. Matthew prepared these tax returns on the side when he wasn't working or ranching himself.
As this trend continued, Matthew began studying the tax code on other matters as well. He went on to also specialize in small business tax returns.
He retired from his career at Southwestern Bell in 1990, but he continued to prepare tax returns part-time. He had been preparing returns for so long that it was common for him to prepare returns for three generations of family members.
His favorite thing to do was help families save tax dollars. He would then teach them how to use that money to build an estate that they could leave to their children someday. He often told his clients, "If I can keep the money in your hands instead of in that deep hole in DC, then I can raise the flag and feel patriotic about it!" Because of his passion and guidance in this area, many clients grew to call him their mentor and father figure.
By the early 2000s, preparing tax returns for farms, ranches, and small businesses had turned into a full-time career. All of this was done without advertising, as he preferred to work by referrals only. He hired staff members to help with the workload, which included his wife and several of his children during different periods of time. What had started out as a friendly favor for his neighbors had turned into a full-fledged family business.
One of Matthew's older sons once asked him when was he finally going to retire. Matthew laughed and said, “I am retired!” His older son frowned a bit. After all, starting a second career and founding a business doesn’t exactly count as retirement. Matthew responded, “If I retire, I’ll rust.” As always, he was true to his word. Matthew ran the business until he passed away at the end of 2021 at 95-years-old.
